The problem is that the code in the install file is "repetitive" ; otherwise everything works fine if this correction is made.

SamAMac commentedI was wondering about this myself. One of the Drupal 5 patches that was posted introduced this subdirectory. But I see now in the documentation that you are correct.
I'm guessing that the title of your post was referring to the .info file? That appears to be the file with duplicated content.
I have corrected these two issues in the Drupal 5 branch.
