we should allow the module and node.js to be configurable to use https for any/all of the network communications.

I have just commited the code related to this. Let me know if it does not work for you or if you want me to redesign some things.

One remark: the client needs to browse first an https page provided by node.js server and accept the certificate. Without that, js script is not able to contact the node.js server.
