I use this module on a 4.7.4 site and when I add a new user to a group (all the groups on the site are invite only) he is promoted to the role that is set in og_promote whether it's the appropriate group or not. I do not use og_mandatory group or other modules that change roles or groups of users.

I can't reproduce this. Does the problem occur with open groups?

Oops sorry, when I filed this I was in the early stages of using drupal and drupal.org so I never tracked this (nor knew how). My apologies!

To answer the question I was at the time using invite only groups (and still). However the problem has gone away since. Possibly with my upgrade of drupal itself.

ps I'm still hoping that a new version of og_promote will come out soon. I read about the new possibilities, but am a non-coder who tends to stick to the official releases. So thanks for the module in its current state and good luck with the next release!
