I built this site 2 years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy - I think I set securepages to force https on the admin pages.

However, the SSL certificate expired on the host (Earthlink) and I can't get in anymore, but I have access to the database.

Is there a way to disable the securepages module so that admin http and not https?

Using phpadmin or something similar, go into the system table in your database. Find the module and set the status to 0 to disable it.
