When users add new blog posts to their individual blogs, the subject show as a link in the main navigation. How do I stop that and have them show up in blogs >> recent posts or something similar.

I believe the default behavior for the blog content type is to publish to the front page so while logged you need to (if in Drupal 4.7.5) go to admin:settings:content type and change the settings.
