App Store Download Location

I've noticed that when an app is downloaded, all of the modules are put into sites/all/modules, which is great if you have a flat modules folder, but many people divide up their modules folder into custom and contrib. Is there a way to check to see if a user has a contrib folder under their modules folder and, if so, put the modules there like how Drush does it? Not a big issue, but keeping in line of my very picky module placement sillyness.
