You should probably start by checking the handbook, as it contains a lot of useful information. Depending on how much you wish to customize the default Drupal features, you should check out the general concepts, the contributed modules page and/or the themes section.

I also found the IMB link in my signature to be very useful in getting a pretty good start with Drupal, but it assumes you are familiar with PHP programming, so I probably wouldn't recommend it right away for you (although the first few parts might actually be pretty interesting, as they define some general concepts regarding Drupal). Also note that the IBM tutorial is extensive. I have a printed copy that is almost 200 pages long...

Indeed you may be surprised if you print each segment as most of them are very long indeed.

Something to keep in mind : the ibm tutorials are outdated, they apply to 4.7, not 5 which has been released. There has been significant changes in the code. But since you are "new" you may not be interested in the code yet, so.

True, true. It's something I keep running into myself as well, but as Drupal 5 has only been out relatively short, one will run into this issue in most of the documentation. But, the majority of the documentation fortunately still applies, even in Drupal 5. It only takes some extra effort to figure out what does, and what doesn't.

Yep the ibm tuts are still quite useful, for lack of anything that tops them. So I have read them (and much is still relevant). It's just that for module-making and forms... well, well, in an ideal world, not this one, there would be another 200-pages IBM tut for Drupal 5.

There's a book coming out in a few months. A few months is darn long time for me though.

Dudertown has some nice tuts as well. The IBM ones that jdevries refers are very good.

careful with the books. There is a new one due out in April that may deal with Drupal 5.0. I am not sure how much changed with regards to the books, and Drupal 5. Some of the information wont be Drupal 5 specific and may be outdated now that Drupal 5.0 is released.
