I am using the site verification module to verify my site first with Google and the Yahoo. I went to Google webmaster tools and added my site and then chose to verify by HTML file. I uploaded the file given by Google using the verify module and that part was successful. I checked the verification by visiting mysite.com/google_verification_code.html but there was just a blank page. Therefore I moved the Google HTML verification file to the root folder then visited the mysite.com/google_verification_code.html and this time I was directed to a plain page with just the code (mysite.com/google_verification_code.html) printed on it. From there I tried to set preferred domain but I was asked to very site and I failed each time. Please assist.

you are done
Upload your file as yoursite.com/google_code.html. You can also verify your site with Bing on Bing webmasters.
Consider Site Verify Module

Thanks all for your time. I have tried using the verify module and the site appears to be verified. At least it says it is. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en-GB .
However, when I try to set "preferred domain," at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/settings?hl=en-GB&siteUrl=http:/... I got a message saying " Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://www.mysite.com/. Please verify http://www.mysite.com/. " I would really like to set preferred domain so that Google does not treat "mysite.com" and "www.mysite.com" as two different sites. Thanks.
Verify both domains
Willk,
Overcoming that is as simple as setting up the alternative domain in your webmasters account. So if you are verifying http://www.yourdomain.com, you should go ahead and set up an account for http://yourdomain.com. That will allow you to set the preferred domain.
---- Make sure you set up that domain in the same web masters account, don't start a brand new webmasters account to do so. Use the same one, just add your domain.
