I understand your frustrations with the current implementation of the other modules you mention in the project description. I feel those same frustrations. And I also agree with your project page's goals for what a megamenu should be able to do.

I had some code I was going to put up as a separate project, but instead I approached the megamenu maintainers and asked if they shared my goals and if we could do a complete re-write for that projects 7.x-2.x version. And they agreed. http://drupal.org/project/megamenu
