My host is offering auto-install of various scripts, and offers both Drupal v4.7 and v5 -- which would be better to install for a brand-new user, with emphasis on e-commerce, store, and image display? Also, how easy are the templates for someone good at HTML/CSS? I already have a sharp design for the site, but need the various script thingies to handle content display (screenshorts of page designs) and e-sales. I've used phpNuke before, but it seems a bit amateurish to me; what I've seen so far of Drupal appears much more appropriate for a real business application.

don't auto install the script through a hosts panel. this will run you into more headaches then its worth in the long run (especially when it comes to upgrading). Drupal 5 has an autoinstaller packaged with it, and should be your first choice especially if you arent comfortable with manually setting the settings.php file in 4.7.x series.

Hmm. I think you may be right about the difficulties with upgrading, if I use the host's auto-installer; I have a similar problem right now with phpNuke on another host. I don't have any problems with setting things manually; I hand-code all my HTML pages and style sheets, and have created extensive mods to the appearance of several phpNuke themes. However, the issue of constant upgrading is one reason I don't care for Nuke for this application; once I have a stable website that is doing what I want it to do (i.e., generate income!), I really don't care to do the upgrade-shuffle, except and only for bug fixes, sorta like Windows. :) Drupal seems more polished somehow, and less um, frivolous?
Because of the issue of needing some type of store thing, I think I may go ahead and install 4.7.

ecommerce module is
ecommerce module is available for Drupal 5.0 as well.
Personally, I'd work on 5.0 for new development.
With Drupal you will still have upgrades to tend to. However, Provided you don't hack the core files, and properly write modules that interact with core, you will never overwrite your changes. Changes to modules though, may always be necessary.
If you are ever in a situation where an upgrade/update is released, only the comparing of template files will be necessary. There are quite a few programs that will compare files side by side showing you whats changed, allowing you to merger changes between files. WinMerge is a nice tool for this, and its free.
e-commerce in v5
I see that both IM_paypal and paypal_framework have updates for version 5; I am not sure which of those modules would work best for what I need, to actually sell a variety of products and services online (site designs, graphics, images). At the moment I have no "merchant account," but I do have a paypal acct, and it seems to be a popular payment choice all over the web.
Any suggestions on which paypal module might work best?
Thx

for a product line (Sizes,
for a product line (Sizes, Colors , Quanities, Shipping calculations, and many other features) you will want to use the ecommerce.module. This too accepts paypal.
LM paypal if more for paid classifieds, donations, and things of that nature. Not really for a store type atmosphere.
Pay Pal Framework ? Havent used it, as LM Paypal replaces it in my tools box. where needs with paypal are simple and concise..
ecommerce module is
As far as I can tell, ecommerce module does not even have a beta for Drupal 5.0 - if you know of anyone who has done a port, I am very interested.
my apologies, you are right.
my apologies, you are right. There is no 5.0 version. I do not know where the HEAD stands with regards to this.
Well - Today 4.7 is
Well - Today 4.7 is old-generation-code... So without a doubt I would choose v5.
What I don't know is the situation with e-commerce modules and the status for upgrading them to be v5 compatible.
But my best guess would be - You being a newbie - That before you have learned enough Drupal to go on air with a site, all modules is upgraded.
