When additional image sizes are specified in Administer | Settings | Images, files with those dimensions are not created via image import.

See _image_get_sizes() and _image_build_derivatives() functions in image.module...

my bad.. this works. please remove/resolve...

it was non-intuitive that the images get created as non-published, and apparently none of that stuff happens til you publish the nodes.... might be cool to mention that on the settings page
