I get the following:
* The current font path is invalid. The default font will be used.
* The current images path is invalid. No images will be used.
* The entered font path is invalid
* The entered image path is invalid
I am using precisely the same locations as I was under 4.7 (I just upgraded to 5.x without errors, at least not any related to captcha or textimage.) both these directories are in my drupal directory (the root of the webserver). I have tried using both relative paths (from the drupal root) and absolute paths (from the filesystem root AND from the drupal root, which in this case just means prepending a slash) and neither works.

badguy commentedset your font/image path to world writable mode (chmod 777) may fix this problem.
hyperlogos commentedokay, it turns out that does solve the problem... but now I have world-writable directories.
is textimage going to stay this way? does textimage actually need write perms in both of those directories? Or either?
jandd commentedthe used API function file_check_directory() from file.inc checks for a writeable directory (see http://api.drupal.org/api/5/function/file_check_directory) the fonts and background directories don't need to be writable AFAICS. I'll provide a patch with a replacement function later.
msameer commentedI replaced file_check_directory with is_dir and now it works fine.
dsextonj commentedWhich directory would be the relative drupal directory? I've tried all directories from the top down.

VValdo commentedThis is certainly a bug that should be fixed... changing to is_dir() worked for me too.

drewish commentedeven though this is the older issue i'm marking it as a duplicate of http://drupal.org/node/147553 because i've attached a patch there.
