The module needs some type of control for generating and displaying 'cite' links only on certain content types, i.e. from admin panel or on the content type edit pages.

Agreed. Obvious and required. Feature requests go against the -dev branch.

It would be useful to take a UI (and possibly code) lead from another module that has done this well. Any suggestions of examples to follow welcome. (And of course patches.) :)

Implementation completed in http://drupalcode.org/project/cite.git/commit/471dac4

Due to a quirk when development moves to a new branch, this will appear in both the -dev and beta branches when I roll a new beta release—which I don't particularly want to do until the Real Names issue (see other thread) is resolved. This feature is however complete in the repository now if anyone wants to check out from the 6.x-1.x branch via git.
