TinyMCE simply does not work
walterbyrd - January 24, 2007 - 04:16
I followed the instructions to the letter. But, nothing works. It acts just as if I never installed it.
I went to "Home » Administer » Site building" and enabled the module.
I went to "Home » Administer » Site configuration" and set everything up
I went to "Home » Administer » User management" and authorized all users
As usual, nothing with drupal "just works." It is especially frustrating with a module like this, because it is such a headache to install in the first place.

I got tinymce working
I initially had problems but got it fixed, please see http://drupal.org/node/111912
I have it working on an
I have it working on an Drupal 5 sandbox (even without the toggle patch).
thus the statement:
wouldn't be quite correct, or fair.
A headache to install isnt quite fair either. It's a two part process, because the tinymce library is not open source and thus cannot be incorporated into the module download. It has to be downloaded seperatly.
Module maintainers are actively updating their modules to Drupal 5, tinymce.module is still being developed, as shown with its -dev tag. If you want a more stable platform, you should be using Drupal 4.7.x. where the modules have matured some and haven't had to be rewritten to work with Drupal 5.
It would benefit if you posted your tinymce folder structure:
are you sure you installed the tinymce library as well as the tinymce.module from drupal.org.
are you getting any errors in your logs ?
i can tell you that the
i can tell you that the instructions for adding "TinyMCE compressor" for faster loading is incorrect in the install.txt
where it says:
6. To boost the performance of TinyMCE, download the "TinyMCE compressor" from:
http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/download.php
Place the tiny_mce_gzip.php file in
modules/tinymce/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce
it should say:
6. To boost the performance of TinyMCE, download the "TinyMCE compressor" from:
http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/download.php
Place the tiny_mce_gzip.php AND tiny_mce_gzip.js files in
modules/tinymce/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce
If you didn't install the gzip compressor and it's not working and you're sure you installed everything in the correct directory structure, then I'm guessing you may have forgotten to go to admin > access control to give users permission to use tiny_mce. it will not work until you assign it to at least one access role.
That was it. Thank you. I
That was it. Thank you. I would have never figured it out if i didn't find this thread. Someone should tell them to change the install text.
because the tinymce library
correction: it is open source code, it just isnt licensed in a way that allows the tinymce module to be included in the module. This however could change.

I am using tinymce 1.1
Being fair
> As usual, nothing with drupal "just works."
>> wouldn't be quite correct, or fair.
Not fair? So far, I'm batting zero.
- tried to install fckeditor - that didn't work
- tried to install widgeditor - works, but I get two text area, until I re-load the page
- tried to install tinymcp - also doesn't work
- installed "Golden Hour" theme - broken in several ways
So really, what am I to think? How would rate something when everything you try to do doesn't work?
according to the folder
according to the folder structure you've placed here, you havent installed it properly.
the tinymce.module (downloaded from drupal.org) gets placed in sites/all/modules/
then you download the library from tinymce.moxiecode.com and place the library (removed from the tinymce folder) in sites/all/modules/tinymce/includes
you state
Not sure what this means, TinyMCE for drupal5 is 0.1 not 1.1 ? please confirm.
test all modules on a core theme, I test all modules on bluemarine (or garland depending on version), to insure that they work with a vanilla installation of drupal before you state that they do not work at all.
I have reset up a sandbox, and went through the steps of installation with regards to tinymce on both garland and bluemarine, and tinymce installs perfectly well.
I am not here to flame drupal or it's user contributed modules. Looking gift horses in the mouth, tends to be bad news. You've chosen to work with the latest release of Drupal. Giving the module and theme maintainers time to work out the bugs would be far more cooperative. If you work on the bleeding edge, expect to shed some blood.
Sorry
I should not be flaming drupal contributors, but I am getting frustrated with everything being broken.
For example: widgeditor crashed my entire site. And I'm not the only one: http://drupal.org/node/110496.
Of course the common wisdom may be that you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but what kind of a "gift" is that?
If something is badly broken, it should not be released, except as a beta. I appreciate the effort, but I think a tiny amount of quality control needs to excersized.
FWIW: Joomla 1.5 has not been out much longer than Drupal 5.0. I have tried joomla 1.5, and it has not had these sorts of issues.
Also, I don't know if drupal 4.7.5 is much better. I installed WebFM on a drupal 4.7.5 site, it didn't work right, but it did break all of my primary links. Some time back, I spent days trying to get the book import/export to work, even emailed the maintainers back and forth; before finally giving up in frustration. I could never get drupal's ecomm module to work correctly, and the ERP module is a joke. BTW: joomla's "Virtuemart" was a cinch to set up, and is much more sophisticated and visually appealing.
My point is, there are other choices out there. Choices which are just as free as drupal. If drupal developers want the project to succeed, I think they need to be a little more careful.
TinyMCE Running just fine here
I must add to this thread, that TinyMCE is running just fine for me under Drupal 5.0.
I followed the instructions, and it did indeed "just work"
Not sure why you're having problems with it, but hopefully someone with knowledge than me will be able to point you in the right direction.
ok walter you win.
ok walter you win. Although I know for a fact that Joomla 1.5 has its own situations with its new version. Same exact situations no. But There are plenty of bug reports on Joomla 1.5. Also, Joomla 1.5 Beta was released a few months ago and is still itself in Beta.
Either way, be part of the community and file issues against he proper modules, so the developers can look into them.
Wiigeditor, ERP & WebFM are fairly new modules so YES, they can have bugs. hence the -dev tag of the modules themselves. They are publicly released so that the bugs can be worked out, as not all server environments are equal. The -dev tag is equal to being BETA. if you only want modules that have matured install modules that do not have this -dev tag. It's ,IMPOSSIBLE for a module developer to test every use case, on every theme, in every environment. They rely on users installing and "TESTING" the modules for use and reports.
You can help and be a productive part of the community by filing ISSUES, to help get the bugs worked out.
The Drupal project itself has succeeded and will continue to do so into the future. Despite your negative reactions to situations you are having. If the system was as bad as you are publicly claiming it to be, the forum would be full of flaming threads like this one. And hardly anyone would be using Drupal at all. This obviously, isn't the case.
Begs the question though, If Joomla is so much better for you in areas that you are having trouble, Then why are you working with Drupal ? I don't mean to be a smart ass here, but inevitably you see value with Drupal or you wouldn't be working with it. Throwing tantrums in the forums is counter productive. Especially when there is a means to get your problems worked out. like filing issues against the modules so they can be fixed. Not all module developers spend time on the forums when they have an issue query to clear.
Now if we could get back on topic of the thread itself and get away from this debate about what Dev's should or shouldn't do.
Have you cleared up your situation with Tinymce ? and if so could you post what the problem itself was, so that it can be documented properly.
Why Drupal?
>>Begs the question though, If Joomla is so much better for you in areas that you are having trouble, Then why are you working with Drupal ?<<
Because it's difficult to switch. Even though Joomla is probably a little easier than drupal, it's still something new to learn. It's always a pain to start all over again.
Even so, I am experimenting with Joomla, and comparing the two. I think drupal may be better as a pure CMS, especially for very big, and very active, sites. But, I think Joomla may be better for people who use a CMS as a sort of framework for a regular home, or small business, web-site.
I think both joomla and drupal are strong projects, in their own ways. But, joomla has a lot of module (or extensions in joomla jargon) that drupal either does not have at all, or don't really work in drupal (webfm, ecomm, widgeditor).
I started with drupal because it was so highly rated everywhere I looked. The ratings are somewhat justified, as I said drupal is probably stronger as a pure CMS.
My asumption is that you
My asumption is that you have fixed your tinymce issue. since you have avoided answering questions about it twice now. Adding what fixed your problem would be beneficial to the community and to the module that created such a frustration. At this stage you are leaving me and others to believe that the situation you were having was fixed with a corrected installation.
Good luck with your endeavors.

I have tried default themes, but it's the same thing. Yes, I have drupal installed in a sub-directory called "main."
Hi there
WYSIWYG editors aren't the strength of Drupal, you are correct about that. Unfortunately, all of these contributed modules rely on third-party Javascript libraries.
In my Drupal 5 installation, I haven't found yet ONE WYSIWYG contrib module that works reasonably well in most modern browsers.
But Drupal 5 just got released, and contrib modules are being updated now.

He's not able to even get
He's not able to even get any to load beyond the one that loaded twice. It's almost aggravating me now, that I can get tinymce to install. I want it to break and it wont.
Did you upgrade to Drupal 5.0, or fresh install?
I don't know if it makes a difference, but I suppose it might.
I used a fresh upgrade.
BTW: there is another thread about TinyMCE not installing on Drupal 5.0. Apparently, a lot of people are having problems.
Here is the other thread about TinyMCE
http://drupal.org/node/80612
While that thread is about
While that thread is about TinyMCE is is not about TinyMCE on Drupal 5 until near the end, when other drug up an older topic about tinymce on 4.7.x.
Don't know what to tell you gentlemen/ladies at this stage. I've installed it multiple times trying to figure out why you are having such problems. Every time i installed it it worked as expected. I can provide a test site on Drupal 5 and give you admin privledges if you would like to see the demo on my sandbox. If this is the case, pleae contact me using my contact form on my profile.
Again, Filing an issue against the tinymce module, or a support request against the module, may be beneficial in this case.
TinyMCE work
I don't know what have you done or how did you install those modules, but i'm using tinyMCE under drupal 5 without any kind of problem.

Installing TinyMCE with Drupal 5
Just a tip that worked for me. I followed the instructions here:
http://discover-doug.com/2007/01/25/installing-tinymce-with-drupal/
Basically it is a two part process, installing the TinyMCE libraries first, then
the module for Drupal. The location for installing the files is different compared
to Drupal 4.x
It still wasn't working for me until I switched to the default theme (I was using
andreas09). Seems like some of the themes have not been setup for using
TinyMCE in Drupal 5...with the default theme TinyMCE finally displayed!
I'm going to look into modifying the theme and see if it will work.
There are other people out
There are other people out there who just can not get TinyMCE installed. I am one of them, I installed as per the instructions and enabled it for the users. Tried to access it and the only thing I see is the regular text box with a link underneath it that says "Disable Rich Text". I thought this was wonderful, the fact it wants to disable something that did not even load. Tried to reload it and now I do not see that link at all. The settings indicate that the the TinyMCE editor was the default editor and nothing.
I don't get it...
On my site (Drupal 5.0) I have tinymce installed, as well as on 5 other sites... so I'm familiar with this installation process.
Now I moved a site over to Verio and upgraded to 5.1, and it will not work.
I see everyones frustrations, and I can only sympathize. I tried breaking it, to get some log messages to see what may be going wrong, and nothing. I even deleted the directory /modules/tinymce/tinymce/ where the actual tinymce jscripts are located, and no error message.
I get "Disable rich text" toggle, but theres nothing to disable.
When I view page source I dont see anything in the head that loads a script.
I'm going to try Moxie one more time, but I'm having the same issue there as well. I also verified that page.tpl.php had print head() in there...
Help us out!?
Pretty please?

Grinin,
You mentioned modules/tinymce/tinymce... That's not the correct path according to the instructions that I followed. I have the following folder.
\sites\all\modules\tinymce
which contains...
CHANGELOG.TXT
includes
LICENSE.txt
README.TXT
themes
tinymce.info
tinymce.module
\sites\all\modules\tinymce\includes contains the tinymce files. Like this....
changelog
docs

INSTALL.TXT
jscripts
readme
I hope this helps,
Chris.

TinyMCE problems
I too had load of problems getting it to work...but then noticed that on the admin pages (which were using a different theme to the modded one for the website) everything was fine...solution: change to the default theme for text editing and then switch back...a pain but it works (or you could just make sure your theme likes TinyMCE in the first place).
TinyMCE Plus
Hi,
Since I see many newbies with limited computer skill and background can not install tinymce succesfully then I started a new project, called as: TinyMCE Plus ( http://drupal.org/project/tinymce_plus )
This PLUS version is ready to use module, just extract and use it!
Any additonal files/libraries/plugin already included!
Sorry, I don't mean to make duplicate module, just want to make thing as simple as possible for newbies. But I add some extra feature to the PLUS version:
- support original tinymce buttons set
- users can define buttons for any lines (i.e: you can move button from line 1 to line 2, etc)
- support block!
- support enable/disable editor for any textareas, comments, and content-types
- support user define textarea id!
This PLUS version only support Drupal 5.x.
The link is access denied
The link is access denied for me.
I using Drupal 5.1. and tinymce doesnt work to me, i tryed all tricks on forums, but not helped.
There are in place three
There are in place three versions of tinymce. You may want to start a new thread, and report what version of tinymce you are using, moxie.module tinymce.module or tiny mce plus module.
The transition from 4.7.x to 5.x with this module has produced a little bit of confusion that I believe is being worked out amongst the different developers.
Just to let you know
My computer background may not be as limited as you think. I have degrees in math and computer science, and have worked in IT for 27 years, including several years as a professional developer.
I am new to drupal, however, and I am finding that, , more often than not, the modules don't work.
Why not use "ALL" that super
Why not use "ALL" that super duper experience and help develop/fix the modules ? Or at least diagnose the problems rather than just state that they don't work. Overly technical terms like they don't work, sure don't help anyone fix them....
This should probably be refined a bit. They may not have worked for you, but they certainly work for others. Sure the transition from Drupal 4 to Drupal 5 was a bit of a bumpy road for some modules and some are still trying to catch up.
Many of the problems with Tinymce are being worked out with new maintainers and a solid build was released not long ago. If you aren't going to get involved in the process and help the maintainers straighten things out .. especially with all that experience, then you are choosing to be part of the problem instead of part of the solution.
Changing Themes fixed my problem.
I had this problem too: the "disable rich text editor" link appeared, but not the actual rich text editor, just the usual plain textarea. By accident, I discovered that if I change the theme to one of the core ones (like "Pushbutton"), the problem disappeared. I've confirmed it: I only had this error while I was using the "meta" theme.
Theme Dependant
Just to be clear, I have had the same problem - took me ages to work it out.
I am running Andreas09 on a site and it had these symptoms:
Module installed ok
Set up all module settings, roles, access permissions correctly
The 'disable rich text' link showed up on edit pages.
No TinyMCE editing tools showed up.
With standard themes there is no problem - this is theme related.
Now off to find if there is a quick fix for this...(hints welcome!)
...and the fix is
edit the file themes//page.tpl.php
add the line
<?php print $scripts ?>In the example of andreas09 it was just after the following three lines:
<title><?php print $head_title ?></title><?php print $head ?>
<?php print $styles ?>
to become:
<title><?php print $head_title ?></title><?php print $head ?>
<?php print $styles ?>
<?php print $scripts ?>
...and it all works fine.
It's not a theme related problem
I'm using plain garland theme and I have the same exact problem.
I tried switching to another core theme with no success.
I'm using drupal 5.5 and tried tinymce std and dev modules.
checked themes//page.tpl.php and $scripts is there.
Very sad situation.
UPDATE:
I just found out the problem is probably due to folder permissions.
When editing "Buttons and plugins" under "Edit tinymce profile", I can't see relative images such as tables, emoticons, etc...
If I try to view those images I got an "Error 403: denied access".
CONFIRMATION!
By changing to "rwxrwxrwx" permissions to folder "sites/all/modules/tinymce/tinymce/" I solved the problem.
I guess the module should check those permissions...
Well sadly, doesnt work for me
I've tried everything proposed here, theme change, and chmoding.
Doesn't change anything.
I still have a normally installed TinyMCE just like on my other Drupal install (which is 5.2).
This one is 5.7, and even though the setup is exactly the same, the "disable rich-text" appears with the standard blank text field (no tinymce, anywhere, on any type of content edit).
Weirder even, since this is the result on Firefox 2.0.0.14, on IE6 I get a Javascript error with a somewhat working TinyMCE (at least it appears) but several icons are missing.
So there's clearly something broken in the code, which makes it sort of show up on IE (since that thing will display anything I guess); but not on FF.
Here's the console output on Firefox :
