It would be great if SimpleMenu had a hook_suppress() function, much like Admin, Administration menu and the D6 port of the Toolbar module do, so that the menu could be disabled as necessary.

It would also allow for the modules to co-exist via the Administration Menu select module with the addition of another hook once the suppress function has been created.
