I'd love to see the option to just default the year to this year and leave the month and day still unset. This makes using it for typical entries quicker, while still maintain the validation. Just now I just have to do this with a form alter.

I'm currently interested in the Webform widget, but I believe CCK renders the same.

Unfortunately the Drupal 6 version of the Date module is no longer supported. That said, we appreciate that you took time to work on this issue. Should this request still be relevant for Drupal 7 please feel free to reopen it. Thank you.
