Is it possible to create a user type for paid memberships?

For an example:

Jane comes to our website, she decides to register, then on the signup form is presented with the option of free lifetime membership or paid yearly membership.

.. and I'm a bit confused, while would they pay for a year, when they can lifetime for free?

assumption here: The paid membership must offer something beyond that of the free lifetime membership.

Thanks for the link I'll check that out.

To answer your question, my clients company needs two types of membership, free lifetime membership which gives users access to various features on their website, but they also need paid yearly memberships which gives access to their offline facilities. Such as studios hire, darkroom hire, on-site courses etc.
