I'm at a total loss here.

I've installed the module twice. Once into the modules folder and then again into sites/all/modules.

I get the module to show up in the admin page, but only with basic settings and then nothing appears when I try to create content.

Please read TinyMCE's issue queue, in particular the thread about the port to Drupal 5. There is an alternate version available there along with some discussion.
