While `drush sqlc` is great, a graphical MySQL front-end could be useful for those less inclined to work on the command line. While phpMyAdmin is the obvious incumbent here, Chive is an excellent alternative.

Note that Barracuda/Octopus already does this within it's install script.

Is this really a potential piece of Aegir functionality though? It's like saying depending on Gnome might be nice too because it's a GUI :)

Would Chive be integrated into the Aegir frontend somehow?

I believe this and other pieces that were submitted recently should be part of a broader "alternd" debian package that would depend on a bunch more stuff:

* chive
* openldap | apache-ds
* postfix
* sympa
* ejabberd | prosody
* statusnet | buddycloud

... except that you replace tiki by drupal + wordpress + gallery + ... name it. I talked with Marc Laporte (tiki project admin and author of that page) just yesterday about this, and while we may go in different directions with this, we have similar requirements.

Therefore, I agree I am not sure this belongs to the trackers here. Maybe we should open up a redmine instance on alternd.org for that kind of stuff but we have this in the meantime: https://redmine.koumbit.net/projects/alternd

I guess where I'm coming from with this, is that, since a community continues to build up around Aegir, it would be a shame not to tap into it for a broader AlternD.org initiative. In fact, it appears there's already quite a bit of community interest to extend Aegir in this direction.

While perhaps not appropriate for Aegir core, a contrib module that injects a link to Chive into the site page (or embeds an iframe in a tabbed sub-page, or something), along with a .deb, if needed, to make setup easy, might work. It seems to me that AlternD.org could be essentially a suite of such contrib modules.

Does Aegir need to be involved directly here, the way that I'm assuming this would work is that Aegir would be part of a larger project, and so we don't need to change anything?

On further consideration, I think we should reconsider this feature in Aegir core. While I agree that supporting additional services, such as email, jabber/irc, &c. are out-of-scope for Aegir itself, phpmyadmin (or chive, &c.) doesn't provide an additional service, per se. Just as Drush provides 'sql-cli', I think Aegir should provide a web-front-end interface.

Note that this feature request against the Debian package for phpMyAdmin would simplify this setup in our own Debian package: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=673172.

In addition, http://drupal.org/project/dblogin, appears to provide something similar within individual sites. It could perhaps be adapted to allow for such links on the site nodes in Aegir.

Leaving as postponed for the time-being.
