Hi AndieCZ,

If you're looking for shared hosting, I still maintain that Site5 is the BEST host for the money.

I've convinced several people to switch, and they all love the power, flexibility, and ridiculously good deals you get (like the current $5 special!). Their support and forums are excellent, too.

But I'm sure that you'll get a million responses here with a million other suggestions.

I've been with Site5 for years, and I have years of experience with other hosts. Site5 is the best.

Nice affiliate link...

Drupalize.Me, The best Drupal training, available all the time, anywhere!

True, but I stand by my recommendation, use them myself, recommend them to friends, family, colleagues, students, and strangers.

They're a great company.

Sign up and try for yourself. Here's a non-affiliate link. I don't care if I get credit or not.

I'm just answering the question. Besides, I figure that most people would do a search and try to find some reviews before making that decision.

I'd kick myself, though, if 100 people signed up on my recommendation and I missed out on making a small share. It doesn't cost you any more to use my affiliate link and give me credit.

I use Site5, and honestly? Slow as all hell. I don't run a particularly complex drupal installation, but it's painfully lethargic at times. Maybe I'm just on an overloaded server, but personally, at the end of my contract I'm moving to another host.
Possibly a virtual server on MediaTemple, who at least have 24/7 trained phone support.

Site5 really used to be very good, but they've gone downhill this past little while - slow responses to urgent queries, and seeminly untrained folks behind the counter. It's possible I've just been unlucky, but I haven't been thrilled with the service.

As long as the webhost has cPanel, it is better

cPanel is usually ourdomain.com:2082

DirectAdmin is usually yourdomain.com:2222

DirectAdmin doesnt allow you to extract ZIP files, which is kind of lame, because you might want to upload stuff in zip files and you just could not extract it in DirectAdmin. And be careful with the `Copy to Clipboard' method in DirectAdmin - you might move some stuff here and there and the result is chaotic

Hi,

I'm sad to hear that, a lot has changed with Site5 and I think you will be very happy to try us since you posted. Here is a nice summary just of what we have done lately:

http://www.site5.com/blog/s5/state-of-site5-for-february-1st-2009/20090201/

And we just added Phusion support for Ruby, rolled out Django support, and have upgraded all servers to 8GB memory. Also over the last 5 months we have upgraded all our older servers to brand new state of the art servers.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Thanks, Ben

I am living a drama there! VERY VERY VERY SLOW!

Can't wait for some extra time to get out of there... Some times it takes ages to get into the admin panel...

I hear so many bad things about MediaTemple, but yet I see a lot of big companies hosting with them. My guess is that their shared sucks, but their dedicated is really really good. What were you on?

I can't imagine why it's soooo bad, didn't used to be.

Your site will take a minute to load. You'll call up and say wtf. They'll say if you don't like the performance get our MYSQL container for 20 more bucks a month. You'll buy it and then you'll say, this is the same as before but now it cost me more, WTF.

Their tech support is amazing but it just seems like they have some core hosting issues that they can resolve. They'll blame it on "bad neighbors" and everything else under the sun. In the end, their basic job is to provide good hosting, so after years of issues if they still can't solve the problem then they fail as a company. I'm sure the big companies get top tier service but also drop buckets of cash.

So I still believe MediaTemple grid server is a big steamer getting worse all the time but I like them as a company and I recently signed up for a dv server(dedicated virtual) at $50 a month. So far I am extremely happy with it's performance. It's nothing short of fantastic. I know there are cheaper good host (I think Rackspace has a hands off $11 cloud that is supposed to be good.) but for a guy like me who does not enjoy server maintenance I think an option like this where MT handles all kernel updates and takes care of everything from Apache down is a good fit for me and well worth the money.

To all the hosting companies out there, There is a real market of people like me who know enough unix to be dangerous but just do not want to be hardware people. I am willing to pay for performance but not if it means being handed a hunk of hardware with a, its your problem now, attitude. Someone need to launch a happy medium hosting solution and people will come The MT grid server was super easy to use but it's shared host system stunk. The same easy of use on a bigger machine would be very welcome.

Hi Greg,

I'm glad that you are happy with (mt) Media Temple and your (dv) DedicatedVirtual server. We always welcome customers opinions and feedback as it allows us to note what people are happy with and where service falls short. As far as the (gs) GridService goes, we are constantly working on improving the stability of our shared server environment. As we continue to work towards implementing new hosting technology, we hope to achieve a more reliable shared hosting product.

I am using mediatemple...

yes it is so damn slow... I am thinking to switch...

anyone have recommendation?

mikeejt’s picture

It depends...if you're looking for a VPS, MediaTemple has the best value (in terms of price and what you get - semi-managed hosting, full control, support, hardware specs, etc.) at $50 per month.

If you want shared hosting, then get HostGator. Best in value (support is very helpful and responsive, cheap beginner plans).

If you know what you're doing in terms of sys-admin, then get Linode VPS. Careful though, there virtually no tech support as you have "full-control" of your VPS. Meaning you're responsible for security updates, os, apache, etc. This is the case for most VPS providers.

If you have the cache, there's a multitude of managed VPS hosting out there, but look to spend $200 per month.

hahahaha -- Really? Only if the "Site5" link wasn't an affiliate link, I'd trust it. I'm checking you
www.siteserving.com, but I've also been with Godaddy.com (my current host...)... but im moving
away from them cause im scared.

Site5 -- been with them tooo -- wasn't too happy with the service, my service in the Denver kept
crashing -- but this was some years back... maybe they have improved?

There is another thread here for this discussion: http://drupal.org/node/110531

For my money I am happy with Hostmonster. I am hosting a site and I like the speed, support, etc. They also do drupal upgrades via control panel. I have heard complaints about slow speed about other hosts which are cheaper than this. (hard to get cheaper than this, but there are some).

kamdroop’s picture

I have to say the best green web hosting provider for Drupal is GreenGeeks and the best normal hosting provider is Hostmonster. Both of them that I use for my sites.

bhibbits’s picture

Thus far I only have disappoints:

Site5 - Server crashed and was down for over 3 days, once it was restored the backup was 3 months old so I lost a ton of data
MediaTemple - Grid = DB connection issues, every day I keep getting timeouts that last a few minutes or sometimes an hour.
GoDaddy - Why offer a 1 click install of Drupal when support will tell you directly that Drupal runs very slow on their servers.

If anyone has a REAL UNBIASED opinion about good hosting please let me know.

Avaya’s picture

I would say Drupal on GoDaddy is pointless (like having wheels on moon boots). Also Drupal on iPower is not as good as iPower says; I get tons of errors (on their side) and the sites are very very slow (about a third of the time the site times out).

kindbuds’s picture

I just switched from them to some "mocha" place, I don't want to add links cause Im already dis-satisfied I uploaded my data base and site files, I got a few database errors and asked them to assist in the initial upstart ( last night I paid 3 years in advance!) They wrote back and refused to help, AT ALL!!! It looks like I will use my 30 day money back option on the first day, Desperately seeking quality drupal hosting with support and all the latest cpanel gadgets.
update... I had another site hosted at Fatcow. They just scammed me and refused to refund even though I called less then 5 minutes after.

picxelplay’s picture

Hahaha, Godaddy sucks at all aspects of life, except domain registration. I would rather cut my hand off than have my site hosted with them. The only thing that made them big was a great marketing program and nascar. That's it. They blow.

These guys are good, the owner is almost always available and there service guys respond. I have run my system www.digitalmania-online.com for about year with no complaints.

I have heard good things about Laughing Squid.

stephenplatz’s picture

I've had Squid host a couple of Drupal sites for me. They're OK if you don't care about shell access and slow up/down speeds. Imagine using drush or cloning sites - not possible in the first case and a headache in the second.

Anonymous’s picture

One of my clients use http://zenutech.com and has had pretty good luck with it. The only thing I have noticed is that DNS gets slow around 4:30 PM Western Pacific Time, but that could be due to the local ISPs. I believe this host is in Ontario, Canada.

kindbuds’s picture

After endless aggravation and 3 failed hosting plans, quality hosting has been found! If you want the best drupal host, you are welcome to read the article at my website.
They have unlimited data bandwidth etc and will even transfer your site out of your old servers for free! That was perfect after struggling with hours and hours of FTP. I think this as the best drupal hosting you can find short of dedicated servers.
Fast page loads and excellent customer service.

saltcod’s picture

For those who still come across this article, I'm currently with Linode. They're unbelievably fast, though they are a VPS company. So get ready to get your feet wet.

duckzland’s picture

try vps.net, it is fast and I believe you can have a 1 month trial ? When I tried their trial program and decided not to use their service (more to the price issue rather than performance issue), they returned the money without any question asked.

If they are a bit cheaper I've used their service :)

davidjamal2’s picture

You can use any web host to host your Drupal website. Most web hosting plans support Drupal.

http://www.threehosts.com/simplescripts/drupal.html

There you can find one of the most reliable web hosts providing easy 1-click installation and management of Drupal.

KarinG’s picture

If so, how is it working for your Drupal site(s)? I just put my first small Drupal site on my (gs) ($20/mo) and performance is horrible. I migrated the exact same site to ANhosting ($5.21/mo) and the difference is night and day (esp. navigating through /admin). The site on ANhosting is always faster (the database is @localhost), and many times the difference in response time is enormous << 1sec on ANhosting vs 20-30sec on the (gs).

I've liked (mt) as a company for my custom PHP sites but the (gs) doesn't work for Drupal - and I'm hooked on Drupal now - so I'm not sure I'll be doing much else in future! Anyways, I'm trying to learn more about Media Temple's (ve) - and I'd much rather hear from you than from the folks at (mt). I'm not looking for the cheapest service, but one where I can comfortably host 5-8 relatively small Drupal sites at all times. ANhosting is still shared hosting and as such has limitations: subject to 'bad neighbors' and max. PHP memory limit is 64MB (default is 32MB but one of the techs told me yesterday they will go up to 64MB if you need it before they 'encourage' you to take on a vps solution from one of their sister companies).

PS - Someone should be able to tell Media Temple they simply can not have a "1-click Drupal install" as a feature on their (gs). It suggests it actually works and it doesn't - not even close. I already had the (gs) service before all this, but I think some folks may actually purchase a (gs) account b/c they see the "1-click Drupal install". That's just not right.

duckzland’s picture

Never use the (gs) but (ve) is fast enough for me. Although there are no cpanel to use and everything is done via ssh.

since a few years i'm using this one for drupal hosting i coulnt be happier, good support and very fast

kindbuds’s picture

They stole $ from my account and charged a $35. fee to replace it. less than 5 minutes after it happened. These folks are thieves.

evanscustom’s picture

Well I am not an expert on drupal however.... I have used 3 Hosts for Drupal.
http://maiahost.com/ I tried out Drupal 7 on this when it was first around for testing, they allowed you to pay per month cancel anytime, drupal 7 is not ready for me or i for it quite yet they refunded my money no quibble after 3 days. Site was setup fast speeds were good.

000web ABSOLUTE crap

I now use http://hotdrupal.com aka Holistic Solutions. Running drupal 6.19 I've always had responses to issues very quickly they are very helpful and just went green on their servers my site is just for remodeling (It's what I do) http://evanscustom.com I recently wiped it out and so am trying to decide on layout all over again. I make my own themes using Artisteer (bit basic).
Eventually I will add a lot more pictures on my site there are some on there right now , I did not deflate these images drupal does that for you they are taken with 8 megapixel camera, (my phone) I have images (JPEGS) set to 100% quality so you
can get an idea of speed,

I am not throttling any modules.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH. They have a really great offer for Drupal hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

Refer to:
http://www.threehosts.com/simplescripts/drupal.html

This web host provides 1-click installation and management of Drupal.

Hope this helps.

kevingavazn7’s picture

Don't choose Godaddy. Some people have some problems with this service.

kgphsuryo’s picture

What problems occurred? Can you be more specific about the problem? Their service prices seem pretty reasonable to me, but I need more information before I chose their service.

seanray’s picture

They use centralized MySQL database server, which make the performace between Drupal and MySQL poor. You can use the VPS or Dedicated server hosting, that would be much better.

scotthorn’s picture

I've been managing a 12,000 node site on a shared godaddy server, and it has been pretty rough. At first, the site would crash every 2 hours and throw 500s for 15 minutes. They recommended activating Zend Optimizer in the php5.ini file, which to their credit did stop the crashes. But the site is still painfully slow at times, like up to 1-2 minutes for a single page load.

It has been designed by Drupal developers for hosting Drupal, Pressflow, OpenAtrium and similar.
All machines are finetuned for Drupal especially.

Dries Buytaert: "Finally, there were several trademark usage requests that were rejected simply because they would endanger the level playing field due to their monopolizing nature. Examples of this include domain names like drupalhosting.xyz or drupalthemes.xyz."

Good balance between quality and cost.

I have a HostGator coupon code, and it can take $10 off.

The coupon code is: BestDrupalHosting

I don't think it is possible to say "the webhosting provided by COMPANY is the best" and here is why:

I used web hosting service provided by a few big US hosting companies within a few past years. Unfortunately my website was inaccessible for me from time to time and their support couldn't solve the problem. It bothered me and I had to move altairhotel.ru (my website) from one hosting provider to another. Some day I found myidealhost.com using google. Not sure why I decided to migrate the website to myidealhost but now the site works fine and I don't contact support every day/week to make the website accessible. So I think some hosting providers could work for you and some not. Anyway I recommend myidealhost.com and hope they will provide the same great in the future.

lashamaro’s picture

I'm personally using hosting from EURO-SPACE, as the connection speed is good and it was recommended positively to host Drupal CMS, there's a php.ini file available in the root folder, which makes it easy to turn on/off safe mode as well as other php functions.

davidpham’s picture

It 's difficult to say who is the best one because it will belong to many factors what you care. There are factors you should take a look:

- Price: I always think about this first
- Security: the brand name must be big to take care your risk
- Location: as near as possible your customers target or you need to buy CDN service as extra
- Caching solution: it should be advantage if hosting company provide caching like memcached, xcache, apc ... on hosting package
- Support language and response time: of course I would refer your native language but I would say English should be fine.

So, answer your questions about above factors then the best one only fit with your need, not all of people :)
