I'm a (italian :) ) new Drupal User, I used Xoops in the past.
I would ask you if there's the ability in Drupal to have blocks like xoops, e.g. "recent articles", "top 10 of something" etc.

Goto /?q=admin/build/block to see a list of the available blocks. Modules normally come with some default blocks installed - eg latest image. Blocks can also contain php code to display whatever you want.
