Hi there. I'm opening this issue to present the ultimate sharing combo and ask the drupal-janrain people if you like it and how could we implement it.
With no further talking, you can find it in the attached image. Let's analyse it:
- First, we have FB like button and I thought this module could do the job.
- Then, we have a (fake) tweet button. I thought this could be and image that when clicked triggers janrain sharing widget (ideally, with twitter selected but maybe this is too much asking).
- And then, we have janrain's share button, customized with CSS.
- At the bottom, we find print/email links that I was planning to implement with print module and a report abuse link that should collect some text (reason for flagging) when clicked (I haven't made my mind on the best way to implement this).
The reasoning behind is that I believe people expect to see (and are more prone to click) the actual like and tweet buttons (instead of just a "share" one).
So, we provide the hassle-free FB like button as-is (where the user completes the task with just one click and 0 typing, some will just want that) but also take advantage of janrain's multiple share widget for the rest (where there's typing involved).
This ultimate sharing combo is a way of revamping janrain's share button and nothing more than that. It should be used in conjunction with the rest of the features janrain enables (like triggering the share widget under certain events, etc). I just feel the standard share button alone is not enough.
What do you thing of this approach ?
Is it possible to trigger janrain's share widget when the tweet button image is clicked ?
cheers
rafa.

7wonders commentedI like your thinking rafa, im also trying to achieve something similar using a mini panel (http://drupal.org/node/1148644). You can definitely trigger the share widget from a tweet button just by customizing the rpx_widgets.css but im trying to figure out how to place the share button wherever i want to which might help in designing your implementation as a custom module.

rafamd commentedGreat, so we are close then. I'm no drupal dev, so I can't help much with the implementation right now but I will certainly share any findings/code/module that we develop, since we are going to hire someone for that.
Good news that it's possible to trigger the sharing widget, so now the bottleneck is getting the share button in place. Guess that shouldn't be big deal for someone skilled. can anyone confirm this ?
thanks for chiming in 7wonders, good luck with those mini panels

BenK commentedThis functionality might be easier to achieve if we first implement a solution for this: http://drupal.org/node/1148644

rafamd commentedFollowing there ...
The ability of manually placing the share button is a very useful feature.
Thanks Ben.

RKS commented@rafamd
Creating a fake Twitter button would violate Twitter's ToC and could get you/your company banned. They may not be able to keep you off individually if they were to ban your personal account (you could just create a new account with an alternate email) but if you have a company then you wouldn't want your Twitter account suspended or deleted.
Both Facebook and Twitter take great offense at having their buttons manipulated. The reason for this is that many unscrupulous people will create a share button that is actually a link to porn or a virus. So they will ban you if you're reported. Will they find out? Maybe not. Especially if you aren't really doing anything bad. But if one person reports you, both of these sites won't care if you're just opening a Janrain widget, they will take action. If you have a Facebook or Twitter button, it has to do exactly what it says without any stops along the way.
(sorry, I know I talk too much.)

rafamd commentedthanks for your input @RKS, very good and relevant information. I would personally think this case could be "forgivable", as it would be a quite legitimate use, but as you say, sometimes people are strict about this things so better not be reported if used this way.
thanks again !

rafamd commentedAfter seeing @RKS comment, I contacted Janrain with a feature request and seems they are planning to add support for something like what we are talking about here :)
