Altering token output in php template

Hey There

In my temaplate file (simplenews-newsletter-body.tpl.php) I would like to alter a token (!subscriber_name) in php before printing it.
Actually i want to split the tokens value (first- & lastname). Is there a way to put the tokens value into a php variable for further manipulation?
