Filing as bug report, but perhaps might be configuration problems, so maybe a support request. Nodejs integration is working find across all my browsers except chromium. the xhr-polling takes upwards of 20 seconds for a GET request, and none of the nodejs configuration pages ever load.

It does sound like a config problem. I can't seem to replicate it but don't have an Ubuntu 11.04 machine handy...

Once the code for #1261236: reminder to pull out chatroom_custom_polling_backend variable in drupalconlondon branch has been committed to the 7.x-2.x branch, wesnick might want to re-test this (in-case its causing this issue).
