Newbee here. I've been drawn to drupal technology quite recently and I am looking to have my website based off it. I'm looking to build an online community/business directory/blog space/forum kind-of-site and was wondering what the average costs for a developer would be for such a task? Maybe even splitting the duties between 2 developers?

Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

Based from my research (official Drupal service provider), a first class Western programmer bills at US$75 an hour.

Yes.. that would be ball park rate to look at.

For Project Management/Architecture Advisory, you should look at $125 -150/hr.

Still ok though. Is Drupal the way to go though for the site I have in mind? It is to be fairly similar to this site: http://newyork.heyletsgo.com/

I do plan on integrating third party databases as well and have better blogging tools and other features. Is that asking for too much out of Drupal? Again, I am new at the designing aspect of websites so please excuse my ignorance.

And someone from Drupal contacted me, proposing to give me 30 bucks given that I advertize their web site (linking to their web site) on my web site front page for one full year.

I am quite poor, but I declined.

Can't wait to make some money to pay for food and rent, though.

But I am not ready yet to add the "provide drupal-related services" link to my profile.

I am really in love with drupal though, and want to invest all the time that's needed to become an expert.

Starting on 2007-02-12 we will be charging by the day for Drupal development. The economics are still being hashed out but you can expect something between $60 and $90 USD per day. I'll spend the weekend putting up more info at Drupal.st.

So what is the usual protocol as far as hiring overseas help? Does the product usually get created first, sent live, and then payment is made? Is there an initial deposit that needs to be invested? Basically how does the employer avoid getting scammed out of their money?

bpocanada’s picture

It all depends on your comfort. You probably should do a ref check on work. We do charge an initial deposit with most clients but for mid sized or fortune 500 clients we invoice them on monthly basis with no deposit.

Every case would be different. Whether its overseas companies or north american companies the ref check and due diligence should be on both sides.

Not all buyers pay on time too :-)

Almost the same here.

Most contracts... unless recurring known customers...

Either 50% up front. And the other 50% when completed.
Or 30% upfront. 30% at midpoint of the project (timing needs to be agreed) and 40% on delivery.

As for Fortune 500... it all depends... some are quick... some are slow. ;-) but usually invoiced.

Overseas... companies always triple checked...

You guys/gals are a welcoming bunch. I appreciate all of the advice.

If anyone is interested in joining me on a startup project, please contact me at kris360 @ gmail.com. We can discuss payment options/plans and further details offsite. Please provide a portfolio.

The site, as mentioned above, will be similar in concept with http://newyork.heyletsgo.com/ but the UI and functionalities I'm wishing to be 50x better. I've come across many impressive sites on here since joining and I wish I will have the pleasure of working with one of you.

Thanks
