kenneth001 commentedi went on the mediafront website with my iphone to see if the mediafront player would work, or simply play the videos they have preload on the media front website. So i could get an idea if i did something wrong on my site. when the media player load up it didn't automatically play or fully load up. I press the play button and the wheel keeps spinning. So with that i want to say that mediafront do work or wont play on iphones i will try with other smart phones and give an update.

drew reece commentedWhat about http://www.mediafront.org/drupalconsf ?
The videos there play on my iPhone iOS 4.3.3 and Firefox 3.6.17.
I think the videos on mediafront homepage don't always play since some are linked to Vimeo & YouTube etc. I suspect the player on mediafront.org is not the latest release? There may be api changes that break the embedding of certain types.
I can only get the html5 & the mp4 video to play on the mediafront.org homepage.

kenneth001 commentedThanks for the reply. You are correct i went to http://www.mediafront.org/drupalconsf and the videos did play on my iphone 4 (4.3.3) software. so do i need to convert the videos to flash first? i upload a video to my website but i used the flash player and it played on my iphone. what is the process to get the videos to play on my iphone with the mediafront player i dont want to abandon the mediafront playe.

drew reece commentedFlash does not play on the iPhone without jail breaking hacks.
You are probably seeing the video in a different format, such as H264 or mp4 on the iPhone. Sites like YouTube store the video in formats like H264, the user sees a Flash player if it is available, but really the video is being passed into Flash as H264. When the user is on an iPhone the original H264 is sent instead of the Flash player.
Mediafront tries to handle all of this for you, so you just pass it a video (ideally not a Flash format) & it gives the user the player that should work for them.
Video, Flash, HTML5 video is a complex issue, do lots of reading.
Mediafront help is listed on the project page.
http://drupal.org/project/mediafront
Mediafront.org has a lot of info too.

kenneth001 commentedthanks for your quick reply. i will do more research into getting the player to work on the iphone. I will go back and look at the installation of the player to see if there is anything i could change or do different. I will watch the drupalcon video's again maybe i missed something. if i figure it out or get it to work i will post the step taken. Think is going to be my next goal.

kenneth001 commentedif anyone knowd the step used to create the mediafront player on http://drupal.org/project/mediafront could you post the steps and module used if any other modules were used. i have been looking into this but cant find a way to set up the player so it can play on the iphone. it play on the iphone the way they have it configured at http://drupal.org/project/mediafront. this would be great help thanks

aathewise commentedkenneth001 the videos hosted on your server that are in a format the iphone can play (mp4, ect...), will work. However, it's not the iphones fault that it can't play HTML5 videos from 3rd party sources like youtube - nor Mediafront's.
The youtube development team is aware of this and have been working on it for a while. I think that youtube isn't allowing other formats then flash yet because of there precious, annoying, google ads.
Here is a article I bing'd - http://www.reelseo.com/youtube-adds-iframe-embed-code-no-iphone/

I check out the link you post and i ran into that problem before were some video didn't play on the iphone that was on youtube. I love the mediafront play and want to continue to use it on my site. i know its not the player after i saw the play work. in the link in #6. im not sure if its my setup, i don't think it is because mediafront automatically convert videos. this is something i'm looking into every day but cant get a answer or solution. I have the generic mp3 file under the media play when i press that file it plays on the iphone but not in the mediplayer.

kenneth001 commentedI updated my mediafront module to 6.1-1.2-rc9 from mediafront-6.x-1.0-rc5. mediafront-6.x-1.0-rc5 release was the only release that would play movies and mp3's on my computer. with the latest update i can play mp3 and video on my computer. i was having problems playing videos and mp3 on my iphone but with the latest update mp3 file now play on my iphone. Videos still dont play with the update half my problems are fixed

kenneth001 commentedmy server provider is godaddy. I'm using file zilla to up load files to my site.
the setup that i have on my site for uploading mp3's. Im using CCK field. I'm using the tutorial " Creating node playlists with mediafront" Thats the setup i have for uploading mp3's to the site.

martinwillb commentedI have converted a video to mp4, and in all kinds of apple formats using miro and uploaded the video to my site using media front and the video just does not play on an I-Phone. It plays on a I-pad. Can any anyone give a good solid reason why content uploaded and converted in mp4 format doesn't play back on I-phones? All I see from some that It should but many are still unable to get this to work even when following the instructions of those who claim that it works. Sorry to be so direct with this comment but if it works on the I-Phone explain to those how you got it to work. If not then it just simply doesn't work. The videos of explaining the different features of the Media Front module doesn't explain in detail how to get it to view on I-Phones or other mobile devices. It wold help if it did. This is an awesome module and I use it a lot. Getting it to work on a mobile device would be great.

drew reece commentedFind a video that does play on an iPhone & iPad & use a Firefox video download plugin to grab a copy of the mp4 file. Then upload to your Drupal site & test it on both devices.
It is likely to either be the format of the video, or the way the video is embedded into the mediafront plugin. Once it works on both platforms on your Drupal site you can inspect the video & try to encode with the same settings. If the video never works it may be a bug with the mediafront player.
Chances are that you are encoding using a version of a codec that doesn't play on the iPad. Not all mp4's are the same.
deanflory commentedCheck the specs of the video file to make sure it is encoded to be able to play on an iPhone. Things such as video dimension size, video bitrate and making sure the presets in your video conversion/transcoding app are set to iPhone if available. Don't quote me on the iPod preset setting below from ffmpegX, but it might give you a start to getting something to work on the iPhone:
x264 h264, 640x352, 800 kbps, 30 fps
Video Specs from the Apple site for the iPhone 4G S:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

trgreen17 commentedUsing this module, YouTube videos don't work on my iPhone either, no matter how many times I press the big play button or the tiny play button, or in any order.
I have an iPhone 4, iOS5.0.1. But these very same videos play perfectly in the iPhone YouTube player, and in the iPhone web browser, so it has to be this module or OSM that's the problem, NOT the iPhone, NOR YouTube, right?
You can't even touch it to get it to open in the iPhone's YouTube Player... seems like that would be a good compromise.
I guess I should have checked before I got so excited about this module. I have it working perfectly, and it's beautiful in all browsers except IE (no poster image, naturally), but I can't get it to play on my iPhone, and that's a dealbreaker for my client, and a lot of money lost for me.
Why is there a Flash requirement anyway? Flash is dying. Please help me find a solution or fix this! My clients have seen the player on their laptops and as soon as I tell them there's no iPhone support, it's back to ugly hand-coded blocks for me, and more importantly, my clients lose the ability to add YouTube videos themselves. It's always something, and it's usually Flash.

drew reece commentedFlash is a fallback for browsers that can't handle HTML5 video. You are not seeing Flash on iOS, it is physically impossible! If your computer browser is showing Flash it is probably because it doesn't support HTML5 video.
I tried loading http://www.mediafront.org/ on iOS5 in Safari since the player there has a YouTube video (last one in list). It fails to load (on wifi) with the large overlay button & the small play button.
The ones that will load (using the small play button) on iOS are 'MP4 Video Support' and 'HTML5 video support' I believe they are both local files.
Ironically Chrome 15 on the mac will play all the video's.
I'd suggest you check out the latest version via git…
http://drupal.org/node/774050/git-instructions/7.x-1.x
and see if that still works, or you could just give up using it.
It would be worth testing in several browsers too.
trgreen17 commented@ drew reece: I'm not sure if you're talking to me, but it works perfectly in all browsers, both platforms, as I said. It just doesn't work on iPhone. I'm just saying that a warning on the Project Page that this module doesn't support the world's most popular mobile device along with the world's most popular video content provider, would have been nice.
So please, do you know if there is ANY other way in Drupal 7 to allow users to simply enter a YouTube URL into a Content Type, and have it show up in a player, AND play on iPhone? Any way at all??
It seems like such a simple thing, but I cannot find a solution. Sorry for the attitude, but I spent all day setting this up only to find that yet again, a promising new technology relies on a dying technology... Flash.
Thanks,
Tim
Comment #19
drew reece commentedYep it was aimed at you, this issue & http://drupal.org/node/811978 suggested to me that you thought Flash saw at fault, which I don't think is the case.
trgreen17 commentedYeah, I can see how you would think that. Look... I'm really sorry for the attitude. All anybody here ever does is try to help, so I'll keep it to myself. I'm just in way over my head on this project and I'm starting to panic.
I spent the last week trying to find a YouTube/iPhone solution, where my colleagues, who are experts in public health and not computers, could log in and post the URL of a relevant video and it shows up on the home page in a player with a playlist, in inverse cron order. It encourages them to participate that way, and it needs to be trivially easy for them.
So yesterday I found this module and was able to build this player and playlist (screenshot attached). It works great in every browser, and it's so easy for the author to handle! - just a Title and a URL and they are done. I was thrilled.
Until I tried it on my iPhone. I saw HTML5 and YouTube on the Project Page and I just dove in. It's my fault for not checking the issue queue. So now I have a beautiful player that plays YouTube videos everywhere but on iPhone, and that's a dealbreaker for us. I'm building this whole site alone, and it goes pretty deep. I started with Zen and a dream, and it's going okay... and now this. I'm just frustrated and lashing out. Sorry to anyone who's had to look at my flurry of snarky posts about this.
But now I need to try to find another solution, and I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks,
Tim

drew reece commentedSorry, I don't have an answer other than saying search the modules & test them :)
It may be worth looking at drupal gardens, it uses the media module which is supposed to handle this kind of embedding, but I don't know if it works on iPhone. They are a quick way to setup & test the modules they offer.
In fact look at the mess at http://dr2.drupalgardens.com/content/more-pics, click the third (mini 1911) item.

trgreen17 commentedThanks for the links.
Just so I understand... even though the iPhone is an HTML5 device, it won't work with this module and YouTube? Does anybody know why? Or if it will ever be fixed?
My understanding was that if your device was HTML5, this module would serve it that way, and if it wasn't HTML5, it would degrade into Flash. So why doesn't it work on the iPhone?
I might be able to keep using this module if I can tell my superiors if and when an iPhone solution might happen. Does anybody know these answers?
Thanks,
Tim
EDIT: I find it hard to believe that this module could be getting all this attention at the Drupal meetups, with presentations and all this buzz, if it can't deliver YouTube content to an iPhone. That's a pretty common scenario that can't be overlooked. So, I keep thinking (and hoping) that either I'm doing something wrong, or that it's on its way somehow. Am I missing something?
One of the biggest frustrations of Drupal (at least for me) is that there's often no definitive source for answers. All this guesswork gets stressful. Thanks for any info or insight anyone can give.
EDIT: So I just uploaded a .mov that was made from Apple Compressor, I used the right codecs, with streaming, uploaded to iPhone through iTunes. The movie plays fine on my iPhone, just not from my site through this plugin. Any ideas on that? Anyone? This module and OSM just doesn't work with iPhone I guess. What a bummer.

martinwillb commentedI have been having a problem with this too. Video plays good in Firefox and in Safari. I just can't get video to play on my I-Phone. I converted video in every kind of apple format. When I embed the video using Medifront it opens up the quicktime media player outside of mediafront. I would love to incorporate this using drupals mobile modules but just can't excellent concept though. Hopefully there will be a revised version to handle video on the iphones.
drew reece commentedYou do realise that is how HTML5 video works on iOS?
Compare your site to http://trailers.apple.com/trailers they should both pop open a movie player. I don't think this will ever change to play video inline on the page.

ultimikeIs this still an issue with the latest version of MediaFront (from either the 6.x or 7.x branch)? If so, please provide step-by-step instructions to reproduce.
Thanks,
-mike
Comment #28
ultimikeRe-reading the thread above, I'm going to guess that the issue is most likely related to the media format used. Not all media formats play in all devices and browsers. When using the latest version of MediaFront, with modern browsers, your best bet would be to only provide .mp4 (video) or .mp3 (audio) files available.
I'm closing this issue for now (based on the lack of response to my last comment), but feel free to re-open (with more details) if this is still an issue.
Thanks,
-mike

mark@redhorseinteractive.com commentedActually, mp4 play only sound on Firefox mac locally for me. Any ideas about this. Uploading a .mov does work though :/
I'm thinking it may be a video compression thing at this point, though.
