Hate to burst your bubble...
But if you expect to be productive with drupal and get anything done, you can't avoid the handbook. It's long because drupal is fairly complex and powerful. So to use it effectively beyond all but the most basic of installs (and I'd question that as well) you're going to have to bite the bullet. It's either now, later or never. Just accept that. I think anyone that tells you otherwise is lying. Think of the handbook as your best friend. Think of this forum as an even better friend.
FYI, Having a handbook foundation will help you ask better questions on these forums so that others can help you faster as well.
That said, lullabot.com does have some good screencasts which will dramatically help ease you in so that when you come back to this site, it won't look as daunting. e.g. you'll have a better idea of what you want to do, where to look, and how to do it.
