If I create a CCK select list which is not a required field, CCK generates a select list where the first row is empty.
Is it possible to avoid this without making this field a required field?

I am looking into this same question now. And will follow up if I note anything.
Make it required
The answer is to make the field "required"
then in the options, define a blank field like. EG
etc
Workaround
Ok, that's a good workaround for a "required" field. But I don't want to make all select fields "required".

Just figured something out
If you enter "|" in the first line. Symbol above the \ key above the Enter button. The option will be blank when you first post that piece of content. If its required and you don't choose it it gives the error that says that the field must be selected. Maybe it will work with a non required field also.
