I need to setup Default front page: to story (http://localhost/drupalsite/story) but I am getting

The path 'story' is either invalid or you do not have access to it.

I have other sites that I had no problem setting the frontpage to 'story' but for some strange reason I can't do that on a new site.

Can anyone help?

'story' is not a default path in Drupal, I suspect you either have a view or some content (node) with the path 'story' or some content on the other sites
