i have a problem updating the core to 6.22 vie drush.

i get the following messages:

Unable to copy !<em>/var/customers/webs/webuser1/myproject/drupal-6.22</em> to !<em>/root/drush-backups/webuser1sql1/20110526150243/drupal</em>.  [error]
Unable to move !<em>/var/customers/webs/webuser1/myproject/drupal-6.22</em> to !<em>/root/drush-backups/webuser1sql1/20110526150243/drupal</em>.  [error]
Failed to backup project directory /var/customers/webs/webuser1/myproject/drupal-6.22 to /root/drush-backups/webuser1sql1/20110526150243/drupal   [error]

I changed some foldernames ( for security reasons) in the code above but the structure of the error messages are the same.
It seems to me, that drush tries to move a subfolder(?) with drupal-6.22 in it, and wants to backup that.
But i do not know why, drush should backup the drupal installation layin in the 'myproject' folder and not the new version.

So it seems to me, there are bigger problems with drush and the update to 6.22

Can somebody help?

I get the same error using drush 4.2.

Upon doing a self-update I am given
bash: /home/ausername/drush/drush: Permission denied

I was able to do the update successfully on my test server so perhaps it is a config issue per server. I will keep digging around.

I have not had a chance to do a 6.22 upgrade myself yet, but I have heard anecdotally from a colleague that it works.

I am getting the same error msg when trying to upgrade from 6.20 to 6.22. I am using Drush 4.4. Checked the directory permissions and all looked fine. I used the same update method with 6.19 to 6.20, so it should have worked.

I was also able to perform the update in a live site. It seems to me your having a problem with permissions of /files/ directory.

btw in my setup I'm the owner of the files dir and I did the update with a non-privileged user.

I was able to upgrade to Drupal 6.22 with no problems using drush-5.x-dev (today's head). There is a problem with today's drush-4.x-dev (see #1171182: File arg on drush_print_table should not have been removed on the 4.x branch.), but it should work in drush-4.4. The problems above must be related to permissions, etc.

I upgraded to the stable release of drush-7.x-4.4.tar.gz and running core-cron still exhibits the same errors I had reported in 1169110. So no change. I will update 1169110 as well.

I was able to update Drupal from 6.20 to 6.22 successfully using the latest stable version of Drush (4.4), but first I had to get all of my Drupal core files up to date with my local SVN repository. I had previously been updating Drupal core via CVS, up through version 6.20.

I encountered this problem with Drush 4.4 trying to update Drupal 6.20 to 6.22 and I resolved it by deleting drupal-6.22 in my home folder then logging in as root and running drush up from the root folder of my Drupal installation.

After using drush to update from 6.20 to 6.22, drush no longer worked:

I was using Drush version 6.x-3.3.
After updating to the current version: 7.x-4.4, drush was able to work again, although I'm experiencing some issues with Drupal modules being listed in admin/build/modules after using drush to download and enable the module.

Running drush as root works, if you can become root. In a hosted environment, you probably can't do that.

I just tried running drush cron as root via sudo, and I see the same error messages.

This is with drush-6.x-3.3.tar.gz which had consistently been working very well PRIOR to the 6.20 to 6.22 upgrade.

I install via the .tar.gz packages which I unpack right on the web server.

I even re-verified the correct perms on all Drupal files this morning and still get the errors and warnings trying to run cron with drush.

Ubuntu 8.04, Drupal 6.22, the above drush version, running with php-cli 5.2.4.

I arrived here when drush failed to update from 6.20 to 6.22. I've updated drupal many times without ever encountering this issue. I posted a full debug above. @#11 frankfarm recommended running drush as root to alleviate permission problems.

I wish 'drush up drupal --debug' would output permission errors, but I just don't see them. I asked for another set of eyeballs to see if a permission problem is revealed in the debug, but nobody has responded.

I understand there are files and directories owned by the user the web server is running as. If that's the case, I understand the permission problem when not root. Files can be owned by a mixture of users.

I have root access on my servers, but people in virtual hosting environments probably don't. Therein lies my last concern about this issue.

File permissions are beyond the scope of drush, but I will tell you what I do.

First, I do not update the live site; I update a dev site. On the live site, my Drupal files are owned by root, or more often, some other admin user called 'www-admin' or something like that. On the dev site, my files are owned by the user I log in as. I set the group of the Drupal files to a group that the web server is a member of, and make files and directories group writable if the web server is writable.

In my drushrc.php, I add:

$command_specific['rsync'] = array('mode' => 'rlptz');

See man rsync for details on the flags, but the long and the short of it is that rsync will preserve the permissions, but not the owner of the files when I transfer them. This means that when I am doing a drush up on my dev machine, I have complete control over ownership issues and do not have to worry so much about stepping on my webserver permissions or issues like that.

There is one side effect when I rsync the updated code back to live, and that is that user-added content (e.g. file uploads) are owned by 'www-data' instead of 'www-admin', so the rsync fails to overwrite any of these files in the transfer. I sort of consider this a feature, but if you want to be able to overwrite user-generated content with drush rsync, you could always run the sync as the 'www-data' user instead of 'www-admin'. I usually rsync from dev to stage before going to live, where stage is another instance of the site on the same server. This lets me fix any unusual perm issues by hand and test a second time in the same environment as the live server before actually bringing the changes live (this time usually using 'mode' => 'az').

Your permissions strategy may vary, but it is a good idea to make a plan about how you are going to manage permissions and what implications that has on the security of your system. It is hard for other people to solve your permissions problems, and the advice of "just run everything as root" is not really a good substitute for understanding how permissions work.

In any event, I am sorry that the existing drush debug output is not currently helping you find the cause of your problem. Add additional debug log statements or permissions checks to drush might help out here; if you add any that you find to be useful, please consider touching them up a bit so that they are silent when everything is working right, and contribute them back to drush in a patch to help other people who end up going down the same path.

I just saw a post at CiviCRM complaining of the same thing with Drupal 6.22, and the suggestion was to drop back to 6.20. It seems to me that the features they tried to give us have a bug someplace.

Interesting that I could use drush to upgrade all the other modules. It still fails on upgrading Drupal from 6.20 to 6.22. It does look like it's trying to backup my 6GB files directory. It seems to get to around 1.7GB before it fails! I have tried increasing the php.ini script timeout, but it still seems to fail at the around the same time/place.

When the drush upgrade script runs, it deletes every file and directories except the '/sites' directory. It creates it's own: /drupal-6.22/ directory. Luckily when it fails, it rolls back the missing files, so the site is usable again after the upgrade attempt. Although one time I have had it fail to do so. Backups are always handy to have!

Does anyone know how I can have the drush upgrade script exclude backing up and removing the /files/ directory?

ok, sometimes it pays to type out a problem :-)

Thinking about #19 above, I moved my files directory somewhere else, and set a sym link to the new location. The site worked ok. To successfully complete the upgrade, I deleted the 'files' sym link, quickly ran the drush upgrade, then put the 'files' sym link back into place. The upgrade only took a few seconds to complete and the process could easily be scripted.

Just a thought for future drush script enhancements:
1) how about having an ability to exclude a directory from being backed up/touched by the 'drush upgrade' script? I can run my own website backup script so that I am then comfortable in upgrading. This way I could say something like: drush @alias up --exclude "files"

2) how about trying to catch and log filesystem drush errors. I presume there must be a way to log the actual filename or directory that is causing the error?

Reading through the above posts, it looks like there could be multiple problems that are blocking the D 6.20 to 6.22 upgrade process. Thanks everyone.

I also got "permission denied" after self-updating to Drush 5.x-dev - I could not even execute drush from its own directory

I had to go back to 4.5-dev and it also fixed the /tmp/cache.inc "permission denied" issue I was getting with pm-download on 4.0
