Drupal 6.22, Slate 6.x-3.0-beta1, fusion 6.x-1.1, skinr 6.x-1.6

I don't want a banner photo, so upgrading to 6.x-3.0 (from 6.x-2.0) was great. I'm happy with the Site Title/Slogan bar in the header, and an image map/navigation bar I made and put in a custom block at the top of the Preface Top section.

But I want those two items to butt up against each other. Instead there's a large gap in between, and the title of the block ("navbar") appears above it. (photo attached, or just check out the site). There is also lots of unwanted space below the navbar.

I see the control to turn off or format the the Block Title -- under http://palindromist.org/admin/build/block/configure/block/4,

But when I set it to None, it still appears --as you can see: http://www.palindromist.org/node/1
When I change that same setting to "Yellow title with bold and capital letters" it works fine. With none, the title appears as white, unbolded letters.

it's not only the title, but the space in there that I want to remove.

The previous version of Acquia Slate (6.x-2.0) had a similar issue with the banner photo. If I set it to None, it showed me the default photo (the jagged rock at the beach.) In fact, I put additional photos of the identical dimension, also .jpgs, in the relevant photo and they showed up in the drop-down box, but if I chose one, that default photo appeared again. The only way I could get a custom banner photo was to rename the file as one of the builtin photos, e.g. "wheat".

Thanks -- fix, or a workaround would be appreciated. I don't mind digging into PHP code but would appreciate a pointer. Thanks!

Update: I removed the text in the Title box altogether, which caused it to not show up of course -- I assumed it had to have a title, like a Page would -- but there is still a vertical gap between the navbar and the site title and slogan box above it.

Also, the navbar is visibly indented a bit on the left, though I made it the same size as the old banners (960 pixels wide.)
