Has anyone pulled off custom redirecting with paypal buttons? i'm looking to redirect based on product nid which i can access in both Rules and Conditional actions but their redirecting doesn't fire.

You won't be able to use Rules. The Conditions there are based on the IPN (Instant Payment Notification) sent by PayPal in a process separate from the buyer's return to your site.

What you want to use are the Successful payment URL and Cancel payment URL options for each product.
