Hi,
I'm new and testing the latest version of Drupal 6 following the hands-on provided in Oreilly Using Drupal book. I'm truly amazed at the immense flexibility of Drupal but I doubt if it's stable to be used.
I noticed EXTREMELY HEAVY Hard Disk activities every time I configure under the Administration session especially in loading/saving module configurations and creating/saving new View / Content Type.
It took about > 1-3 mins to load and save the module page, I can see my hard disk light keeps blinking.
What's unbearable, it also takes around 15-45seconds for saving a View / Content Type configurations. My Hard Disk light is constantly on during the process of saving. I'm really worried about my Hard Disk health status and doubt if Drupal will my crack it physically sooner.
I come from Joomla and just testing Drupal after hitting limitations in Joomla. For the first impression is Drupal just looks like an ugly witch as compared to Joomla. After playing around with Drupal these few days, I'm really impressed with its flexibilities and think it can be a good choice for my new projects.
Yes, I love the CCK and View in Drupal and many granular settings being extended by other modules. Joomla does have a number of good CCK now but each is working in a silo mode, lack of integration and collaboration.
The only issue puzzling me now is the terribly heavy Hard Disk Activities with Drupal and I'd never encountered it with Joomla and any softwares before. Why is Drupal so slow and constantly torturing my Laptop Hard Disk ? I'd tried many solutions provided in the forum as follows but none is workable.
Currently, I feel ashamed of demonstrating Drupal to my clients using my Laptop with such a slow loading process and heavy Hard disk activities under the Admin Session. Thanks.

I have the same problem with you, and I thought it would be a problem when I put my drupal site on a real server instead of wamp. I thought it would go even slower. But I was wrong. On the server drupal runs very fast. Maybe the problem is not the drupal, but in the wamp and the parameters we have to give in the php settings?
Anyway, I made a demo site online and i prefer to show my work to clients through internet, instead of using my laptop's memory and hard drive, and now I have no problem. It was a better solution for me, and I think it looks more professional when you show your work online

Hi,
Yes, I also found no problems if putting on the server. However, I wanna trace out the problem of why it's so slow on laptop via localhost, quite many posts had been made by others on this issue but seemingly no solutions yet till now.
I do have Joomla and Wordpress installed on my laptop via localhost, both are running perfectly in the admin sessions, only Drupal is giving such a headache in the admin settings.
Sometimes, the client side may not have the Internet access or what about suddenly line down or being unstable. Often, I used to present the ideas and prototype using my Laptop, tks.
I'm assuming you are hearing
I'm assuming you are hearing disk thrashing.
It can be due to paging memory out to disk when you run out. It isn't clear what spec of computer you have or what OS it is running, so you'll need to know where to look…
Find out how much free RAM you have, & ideally see how many page-outs are listed, if the number keeps growing as you work you need more RAM. Tweaking the amount dedicated to Apache, PHP & Mysql may help, but is an involved process.
I find developing with Safari on Mac OS, Safari will eat GB's of RAM, so it could be another process causing the thrashing, but you may only see that when loading up 40 pages of Drupal docs in your browser, whilst running Chrome & Firefox & a text editor & … :)
Mine now runs really well since I went from 2GB to 6GB of RAM.
I run XAMPP on a Windows 7 PC
I run XAMPP on a Windows 7 PC with Dreamweaver, Firefox with 20 sites open including localhost, two monitors and video cards, iTunes, and Photoshop and my localhost sites continue to work extremely fast running two D6 installations and a D7 installation simultaneously. 8GB of RAM. I have never seen this issue. Page loads are usually < 2 seconds. Indeed, on my netbook I even run Windows XP, XAMPP, Drupal, and Dreamweaver on 256MB RAM. (admittedly it gets a little slow, but still 5-10 second page loads)

Hi,
You mean the front-page access or under the Admin namely Creating/Saving New View / Content Types ? What about loading module page / enabling & disabling modules ? How long will it take ?
Hi, Yes, every time when I
Hi,
Yes, every time when I save a View or Content Type configuration or any settings under the Admin, the disk light was just constantly on for about 15 - 30 seconds. To me, it's really bad.
Enabling/Disabling module page took even longer, about > 1 - 3 mins.
I'm running on WinXP SP3 with 2GB RAM, Apache 2.2, MySQL 5.x and PHP 5.x.
Indeed, the front-page and site access are extremely fast, excellent, only Admin Settings are giving so much headaches. I'm really worried about my Hard Disk with such heavy disk activities.
If Drupal really requires 6GB of RAM for development on a local laptop, then Drupal is considered terribly BAD already, more resource-hungry than Oracle enterprise tools.
I doubt may be configurations or some other settings to be required if running on LocalHost. I tried disabling Update and many PHP/Apache and cache settings as mentioned above, all ended up in vain.
If Drupal really requires 6GB
Yep you are right, that's why you should look to see if the issue is the machine paging memory out to disk. Take a look at the memory & CPU load for the Apache & Mysql processes. Compare them by loading a Drupal page & a Wordpress or Joomla page.
Does disconnecting from all networks (reboot too) make any difference (eg a routing or DNS issue)?

Hi,
I tried all but none is workable. Wondering if there's a Standard Configuration Guide since so many people are encountering problems with localhost (on PC / laptop).
Tks

I had this problem with a site a while back, turned out it was the update module causing the problem. Basically it was checking for updates every time I loaded an admin page, and because I was behind a proxy the requests were timing out and making everything deathly slow. I think you can either configure your server/drupal install to allow remote connections, or turn the update module off entirely while you're developing locally.

Slightly improved only, not as fast as Joomla / Wordpress. Still worrying my Hard Disk.

I too have noticed that, My shared web host is faster than my localhost. This thread might be of any help... http://drupal.org/node/348202

Switch to Zend Server CE
1.) The said setting could speed things up on WAMP a lot but ...
2.) No way it can match Zend server CE out of the box, which you can download for free
3.) How to set up Zend Server:
http://drupal.org/node/348202#comment-3349704
4.) With the said setting my average click respose time is about 1 sec.
5.) You can push it further by applied MySql setting folowed this tutorial:
http://tiger-fish.com/blog/wamp-server-and-drupal-running-slowly
6.) Disable update manager and system loggings when not using
7.) Enjoy a whole new world of Drupal
This applied to both Drupal 6 & 7. Most page load instantly when click, module page need about 1 sec waiting for 30 modules installed, but not that fast when enable/disable module. A bit annoying when you want to use drupal like a native program or plain html page;)
