There's some text on this handbook page that deals with 4.6. I would have re-written it, but since I've never used CVS before, I didn't think that was a great idea...

Would someone take 2 minutes and proofread the command line code for Installing Drupal from CVS?

I updated the CVS command, only to realize after the fact that the update invalidated a fair number of the 4.6-centric instructions on the page (and the screenshots), so I took the liberty of updating all the instructions on the page to match Drupal 5, and I also removed the screenshots from 4.6.
