No, IMO, there are still some issues left.

Is this project still under development? Will there be a 6.x version? Is there some other module that is a suitable replacement?

There will be a 6.x version. The current patch is functional, apart from breaking comment previews due to a caching problem. Marking fixed as there is a 5.x release.

Scratch that. I thought this was about comment_upload.

The project is now under new management and is working toward a stable release.
