This is much sought after functionality, it deserves to be a full blown project.

It seems a plupload submodule is the ruling idea there. If you agree i will give you VCS access there.

chx, when it should be a submodule, then you have to change the source code of the plupload integration module because there is a bug "you must upload at least one file" which is only fixed by http://drupal.org/node/1140666#comment-4402928

Mupload is being integrated with Plupload in the very near future, so this issue is closed by default.
