It is often useful to create kits of gear made up of serial numbered components and then be able to track them as a single unit.
For example:

Small Light Kit 1231
     1K 1234
     1K 2348
      750W 7234
      650W 875

Tracking Small Light Kit 1231 as it moves around is much easier than tracking the 4 items and the case. It is still necessary to know that camera 167 is in camera kit 874 so that it can have its firmware updated.

I use Node Reference for this. A Relationship in Views allows you to report on all Reservations made on a node included in a kit, but for MERCI's UI the user is only show the option of reserving the "kit" node.
