I found this bug in the 6.x-1.x dev branch. Patch attached that appears to fix it. Sort of related to http://drupal.org/node/829170 but that was beta 5 and that also included another issue of button position.

After using this patch, my 'create node' steps were just skipped. Didn't do much bug tracking on it, but maybe you check it out...

Odd, I'm using routes on content profile nodes and the create node steps work. Were you using them with content profile node types or others?
