I have been unable to download Drupal core for several weeks.

This is the output from my Linux Gnome terminal (on Ubuntu 10.10) when I attempt to download the Drupal core:

Works fine with today's master. From your report, it looks like perhaps your /tmp directory is not writable, although that is an odd state of affairs, since drush checks to see if the tmp directory is writable before using it.

Thanks for your prompt reply, but I have confirmed that the /tmp directory is writable. I have found that I can get 'drush dl drupal' to install drupal-7.2 at /home/[user_name]/drupal-7.2 (when the command is executed from the /home/[user_name]/workspace directory) if the following change is made to drush/commands/pm/pm.drush.inc at line 2156:

FROM:
      else {
        $request['project_dir'] = $request['name']; 
      }

TO:
      else {
        if (empty($request['version'])) {
          $request['project_dir'] = $request['name'];  
        }
        else {
          $request['project_dir'] = $request['name'].'-'.$request['version']; 
        }
      }

Basically, what was broken with the 'drush dl drupal' command was that the basename for the temporary download directory was 'drupal-7.2' and not 'drupal' when the command attempted to move the temporary directory to the final project installation directory.

I'm not totally happy with this fix because it still does not install drupal-7.2 in the workspace directory, which was the directory I was working from.

I also still need to investigate the other two bug cases.

Greg, can you advise whether this fix would be suitable for a commit?

To investigate further, attach the output of drush dl drupal --debug.

OTOH drush dl drupal-6 is not valid. Instead you can use drush dl drupal --default-major=6, drush dl drupal-6.x or drush dl drupal-6.22.

The following is the output I get for 'drush dl drupal --debug'. Please note that the download function is looking for "Source directory /tmp/drush_tmp_1307931613/drupal" and not "/tmp/drush_tmp_1307931613/drupal-7.2", which is where the temporary directory is actually stored after the download file is decompressed.

$request['project_type'] is set in commands/pm/pm.drush.inc:2153 so perhaps it is a problem with the update service or your libxml library.

Please post also the output of $ php -i |grep -i xml and $ apt-show-versions |grep xml. I've a Ubuntu Lucid where drush dl drupal is working. This is my data (I've removed irrelevant data from the output):
