As a Drupal rookie, what's the best method to use to get help with, or ask questions about installation, functionality, etc. of any specific module?

Your best bet for interactive assistance is IRC: http://drupal.org/irc. There are channels for some of the major modules and concepts.

Always search the issue queue for a specific module; chances are your question/issue isn't new.
