Our team uses Haml for views when we're working in Ruby, and it seems like it would be very appealing to use a Haml theme engine for Drupal. There hasn't been any action here in a long time, but I wanted to check in and see if the maintainer was still involved.

i would LOVE this also. after using haml, writing regular html templates sucks.

Ditto. And D7 release would be great. If the maintainer isn't interested in maintaining this, can it be marked as "Seeking co-maintainer(s)" or "Seeking new maintainer"?

It does seem that this project is abandoned, but there's an active HAML engine (including SASS/LESS support) here:
http://drupal.org/project/peroxide

They haven't pushed the code to Drupal's repo, probably because of they want to distribute phamlp (BSD license) with the code, which is verboten on Drupal.org. Instead, you can get it here (both D6 and D7).

I haven't tested Peroxide at all yet, so it may not be what you need, but it seems like a definite step in the right direction - that is, away from the insanity that is mixing PHP and markup!
