adding additionanl <h1>Tag

i can't figure it out, if i enable "Use the teaser of the page if the meta description is not set." then my pages suddenly become distorted.

It adds an additional h1 tag with the content from my title.

1. why is this happening, this seems outside of setting meta data
2. any fix?
