#1120030: Support moving of core files to core/ directory
Change git checkout so that it doesn't care whether an identifier is a branch or a tag and then:
#1172366: Testing works only against a branch (-dev) not against a tag
#1100376: Confirmation should be against a known-good tag instead of against HEAD
#1174966: Accept only -p1 (git apply) patches is something we promised.
