Zebra striping one comment after another is working fine.
However, when using threaded comments, there currently doesn't seem to be a way to do zebra striping by thread. It would nice if each comment had a class that contained zebra information for it's parent thread, as well as the "indented" class.
This would eliminate the need for the extra DIV with the "indented" class, currently being used by child comments.
Currently with $zebra added to the class:
<div id="comments" class="comment-wrapper">
<a id="comment-1"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix even" about="/comment/1#comment-1" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<a id="comment-2"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix odd" about="/comment/2#comment-2" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<div class="indented">
<a id="comment-4"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix even" about="/comment/4#comment-4" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
</div>
<a id="comment-3"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix odd" about="/comment/3#comment-3" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<form class="comment-form" action="/comment/reply/16" method="post" id="comment-form" accept-charset="UTF-8">
...
</form>
</div>
Proposed:
<div id="comments" class="comment-wrapper">
<a id="comment-1"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix comment-even thread-even" about="/comment/1#comment-1" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<a id="comment-2"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix comment-odd thread-odd" about="/comment/2#comment-2" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<a id="comment-4"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix comment-even thread-odd indented" about="/comment/4#comment-4" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<a id="comment-3"></a>
<div class="comment comment-by-viewer clearfix comment-odd thread-even" about="/comment/3#comment-3" typeof="sioc:Post sioct:Comment">
...
</div>
<form class="comment-form" action="/comment/reply/16" method="post" id="comment-form" accept-charset="UTF-8">
...
</form>
</div>

dixon_Personally, this sounds like an edge case that core should add a lot of complex logic for, to solve. Anyway, it's a valid feature request but applies to 8.x first.

smustgrave commentedThank you for sharing your idea for improving Drupal.
We are working to decide if this proposal meets the Criteria for evaluating proposed changes. There hasn't been any discussion here for over 8 years which suggests that this has either been implemented or there is no community support. Your thoughts on this will allow a decision to be made.
Since we need more information to move forward with this issue, the status is now Postponed (maintainer needs more info). If we don't receive additional information to help with the issue, it may be closed after three months.
Thanks!

smustgrave commentedSince there's been no follow up as a feature request going to close this one out. Can always be re-opened.
Thanks!
