Signup for a role with an authenticated user [#119711]

It would be great if it would be possible to give already authenticated users the option to sign up for a role (for example writer or editor) which then has to be accepted by an administrator.

Another great feature would be if you could base those requests on existing information drupal collected about the user.
For example you can only make a request to be an editor if you have been registered for 3 months.

Illithium has good idea.

Up the same road but somewhat different: how about assigning a different workflow based on the requested role, REGARDLESS of the current role of the user.

In other words, an anonymous user can register for Role1 which doesn't require admin approval or Role2 which does.
