Thought i'd put this out into the wilds of the drupal forums as I'm at somewhat of an impasse...
Working on a site, custom theme, dreamhost hosted
The site is around half complete, but loading times are already what I consider unacceptable.
Download devel module, queries are at a marginally respectable 1.5-2.5 sec
However, I've experienced page load times of between 6 and 15 seconds - most being around 8-9 sec
What does this mean about my site?

I'm using gallery for random images on frontpage
Wrote my own module for inventory listings
style.css is 769 lines long
page.tpl is pretty standard
any advice greatly appreciated!

It's probably your host
It's been my experience (although not with dreamhost) that Drupal sites, and others that rely upon PHP and MySQL, don't perform well on shared hosting accounts. IMO using a VPS (Virtual Private Server) or an account at a vendor that specializes in Drupal hosting will give you MUCH better performance.
That said, you might try looking at your site with Firefox and the Firebug extension. Firebug will show you the times to download individual elements. This may help you identify problem areas that you can address, regardless of the hosting company.
Good luck,
Mel
...and then there was firebug
Great advice!
With firebug I found a missing print.css file and menu leaf graphic that were holding things up by over 6 seconds!
Seems the site would search for them every load...
Now I'm down to a speed I can live with...at least for the time being
I can pear down the css and graphics a bit, but definitely will be looking into different hosting options!
Thank you Mel!
