I want to be able to add a breadcrumb trail to a page without putting it in the menu system. The menu_breadcrumb module works well for most of my content, but I want to keep the Primary Links menu limited to a few levels in depth and still be able to assign a parent item to sub-pages below that without creating additional menu items for them. In other words, when editing a page, I want to be able to optionally assign an existing menu item as its parent for the purpose of having at least the first three levels of the menu appear as breadcrumbs.
Automated solutions to categorize new nodes by content type or taxonomy terms will not help me here. I really need to be able to select the "parent" for a node from a drop-down of existing menu items.
Is there any way to get this done?

No solution found, still interested
No. I never found a direct solution, and this project is no longer one of my currently active ones. I had to take the route of training the clients to keep the main navigation to only three layers (for the megamenu built into the Marinelli theme) and they were fine with in-content links to anything below that as that's how much of their old legacy content was written anyhow.
Haven't done anything directly on this project for the past few months, but would love to hear about approaches taken by anybody else.
