The attribute mapping functionality states that it (requires user_profile module). For a D7 installation what does this mean? A search for user_profile in modules does not provide a clear answer.

Hi Chris,

That is a throw-back to the D6 module and I have just removed it to avoid confusion. At some point it would be useful to have a means of syncing certain field values from the user entity to PHPlist attributes. I'll leave this as a feature request as a reminder.
