Is there a way to have the proximity search use the city as opposed to the area/zip code? Perhaps someone has a solution using the "Use PHP code to determine latitude/longitude" option? the best solution in my opinion would be one box to take both values. I'm not very familiar with the gmap module so some pointers where to start would be very helpful.

With Views and the Location module, you can add the field "Location: Distance / Proximity".
