Hello forum,

I would appreciate if anyone can share what Drupal cannot do out of the box or with a small time of development.

Thanks a lot

You will probably find it more useful to ask can Drupal do 'X', where 'X' is some feature you want on your web site. It is also a much easier question to answer. Out of the box, Drupal core has a solid set of features, through in the contributed modules and the what it can do becomes even larger.

My top 10 things Drupal can't do (out of the box) : )

Drupal cannot:

make a cup of coffee
eat the last doughnut (or the first doughnut)
do the laundry
walk the dogs
organize the garage
mow the lawn
teleport you to a distant planet
protect you from stormtroopers
teach you to be a guitar god
replace a girlfriend/boyfriend (although it can give you the same type of headache at times) : )

I am expecting to see at least 50% of those features make core in v6

Yes I agree. When will the Drupal 6 RC be out with these features? I'd like to see it by Spring before the grass on my lawn gets too tall. It will be nice when the wife complains about the lawn not looking good...I can blame it on Drupal. Oh wait, she already blames Drupal and the computer...

At one extreme: Drupal 'out of the box' is pretty basic (and lots of us like it that way). It gives you a fairly simple online community site.

At the other extreme: Drupal can pretty much do anything if you know it well enough and can code PHP.

In the middle though there is a very wide range where people can get progressively more functional sites by tweaking themes, adding modules, creating their own theme, and even creating their own modules.

Drupal is really a flexible web site development framework that really shines with online communities. It does come 'out of the box' with simple base site functionality you can use (and this base site functionality is getting better each version), but generally nearly everyone will extend that by adding their own choices of contrib modules.

If you are purely an 'out of the box' type person, you might not find Drupal does all you want. That's because it isn't intended to do everything out of the box.

On drupal.org/support it says:

Until Drupal washes your laundry for you, it is incomplete.

So there you go.

This might be referred to as "feature creep". It is my nemesis.
